Just wondering if anyone has an Options Analysis template or something similar that has been used strictly to present a steering committee with options at a project gate to decide which direction to go. The project is already funded and underway, but as we worked through the Plan stage we realised there was a lot of additional work and unknowns involved for the timelines on offer.
I have a register with Assumptions, Constraints, Dependencies, Issues, Risks but not many Requirements yet (most users aren’t even aware of this, it’s a business initiative and their requirement is simply “use OneDrive”). The plan is to sync local data from user profiles to OneDrive so everyone has a portable, accessible and backed up copy of their data rather than relying solely on the integrity of their C: and personal device.
The best I’ve come up with so far is by using the Business Case template and stripping out what’s not required, but I’m concerned I may strip too much in doing so. Based on this template I would keep the following:
- Executive Summary
- Purpose
- Intended audience
- Background & business context
- Business Outcomes
- Options Analysis section
- Options Evaluated
- Assumptions
- Constraints
- Dependencies
- Risks & Issues
- Recommendation section
- Recommended Option
- Project Scope (In/Out)
- Impact of Proposed Change
- Timeframe
I’m not sure anything else adds value and at this stage I think there are too many sections. I’m not selling them on a project, just a way forward to clarify what’s feasible in the current environment and with the time/budget remaining for this FY. Ideally I need a feasible template that can be completed in 2 working days based on the information I already have available and some discussion with SME’s across various teams for input.

Hey Mike, given the level of the audience and the intent of displaying strategy analysis aligned content with specified options, I think your approach of using the BC is the way to go. Just keep in mind the audience and what they want to know, as well as the message you are trying to convey, that way you won’t stripe out anything unnecessary.
